Marketing is not broken. Your strategy is.

When results underperform, the instinct is to change the tactic. The real problem is often one level deeper.

‘The marketing isn’t working.’ I have heard some version of this throughout my career.

So the response becomes: change the ads, post more, redo the website, hire a different agency, try another channel, launch another campaign.

Sometimes one of those things does need to change. But before I touch the tactic, I want to know: What strategy was the tactic supposed to execute?

Strategy is the bridge.

Your business goal tells you where you want to go. Strategy determines who matters most, what they need, why they should care, why you are relevant, what makes you meaningfully different, what you need them to understand, and where to focus.

A business goal is not a strategy. And a list of activities is not one either.

Only then should you decide what to execute.

Without that layer, when something underperforms nobody knows whether the problem was the audience, offer, positioning, message, channel, creative, timing, or tactic itself. So another tactic gets tried.

More tools have made strategic thinking more important, not less.

AI, automation, templates, content engines, CRMs, ad platforms, self-service design, and analytics have made execution easier than ever.

But easier execution does not remove the need for thinking. Technology can help execute an answer. It cannot compensate for starting with the wrong question.

That is what I mean by strategy before everything. Not because execution does not matter, but because strategy tells execution what deserves to be executed.

Apply the thinking

Bring me the goal. Leave with direction.

If this idea revealed a question inside your business, we can examine the evidence, find the connection, and build the strategy around what is actually true.
